Woveo Joins Fintech Sandbox to Expand Credit Access for Thin-File Small Businesses

Access to premium credit, cash-flow and alternative data will sharpen the agentic AI underwriting Woveo uses to unlock capital for thin-file small-business borrowers

Calgary, Alberta, August 18, 2026

Woveo, the AI-powered credit infrastructure that enables financial institutions and community organizations to profitably originate, underwrite and service small-business microloans, today announced it has been accepted into the Fintech Sandbox Data Access Residency Program.

Through the residency, Woveo gains complimentary access to premium financial data feeds and APIs from Fintech Sandbox's network of more than 40 data and infrastructure partners — a roster that includes Boss Insights, Data Axle, S&P Global, Nasdaq, Equifax, Plaid and AWS. Startups in the program have collectively saved more than $50 million in data costs.

For Woveo, the value is specific: better data means better credit decisions. The company's underwriting infrastructure is built for entrepreneurs who fall outside conventional credit scoring — newcomers, immigrant-owned businesses and owner-operators with thin or no credit file. Rather than relying on a traditional score alone, Woveo assesses real cash-flow behaviour, alternative signals and community accountability to determine who can responsibly carry credit.

Access to institutional-grade credit, firmographic and alternative datasets lets Woveo test and validate that infrastructure against far richer inputs than an early-stage company could otherwise afford. Woveo plans to use the residency to refine its risk models, reduce false declines for thin-file applicants, and broaden the range of signals its lending partners can evaluate at origination.

The hardest part of lending to credit-invisible business owners isn't willingness, it's evidence. This residency gives us access to the depth of data needed to better measure risk, say yes to more deserving entrepreneurs, and price credit appropriately.

The stakes are structural. According to the OECD, small businesses in Canada have seen their share of new business lending fall by 64% since 2011. That retreat creates an especially difficult environment for newcomer, immigrant-owned and community-rooted businesses that conventional credit models can struggle to assess.

Woveo's agentic AI underwriting infrastructure gathers, reconciles and analyzes evidence about a business, including cash-flow patterns, payment behaviour and accountability signals, to support more informed and explainable credit decisions. Richer, institutional-grade data is the raw material that makes this approach work, and the residency supplies it. For Woveo, financial inclusion is not a concession on risk; it is the product of measuring risk more accurately.

Participation in the residency also connects Woveo directly with leading data providers, creating opportunities for deeper commercial relationships beyond the program.
